Common Alternator Questions, Honest Answers

  1. Can you rebuild my alternator instead of replacing it? Alternators can be rebuilt, and that used to be a common repair. Today though, it is more cost efficient to replace the entire assembly. The labor to rebuild an alternator exceeds the cost required for a new one, and the new alternator comes with a warranty!
  2. Will a bad alternator damage my battery? Yes. One of the alternator's jobs is to maintain the proper charge on your vehicle's battery. A faulty alternator means your battery isn't charging appropriately. This can lead to draining your battery to a damaging level. While some modern batteries can be drained to near zero, most batteries are permanently damaged if they get down to 50% charge.
  3. Could the problem be my battery or my starter instead? Possibly. Our ASE certified technicians use state-of-the-art equipment to test each component and confirm which one is causing your issue. If you have no lights on the dash or nothing happens when you turn the key, it may be your battery. If you hear clicking or a weak electrical sound when trying to start the vehicle, it may be your starter. But some symptoms may disguise the real root of the problem, so anytime you have a starting or charging issue, you need to get it tested by a certified repair facility.
