Common Starter Questions, Honest Answers

  1. It starts fine with jumper cables, is it really my starter? That may be a good sign that it is not actually your starter. If your battery seems to die often, but a good Samaritan with jumper cables gets you going every time, it may be your alternator rather than your starter. Anytime you have starting or charging issues, you need to get it tested by a certified repair facility.
  2. Will a bad starter damage my battery? It's actually the other way around. A bad battery can damage a perfectly good starter. If you've noticed a weak sounding or slow-turning motor when trying to start the vehicle and have been putting off a replacement, you should bite the bullet and do the battery now so that you don't add a new starter to the repair bill.
  3. Could the problem be my battery or my alternator instead? Possibly. Our ASE certified technicians use state-of-the-art equipment to test each component and confirm which one is causing your issue. If you have no lights on the dash or nothing happens when you turn the key, it may be your battery. If your battery dies frequently, it may be your alternator. But some symptoms may disguise the real root of the problem, so anytime you have a starting or charging issue, you need to get it tested by a certified repair facility.
